Hi Lindsay,

I hope you are doing well. I'm just reaching out regarding an accessibility issue I have come across: TheAccessText Network (ATN) was recently taken down due to an impasse between Georgia Tech and the Association of American Publishers.

I am not sure about how your institutions source accessible textbooks, but for the Library Accessibility Services team at York University, losing access to the ATN means we have lost access to the repository hub of over 50 academic publishers storing over 750,000 digital titles. The real advantage of ATN was that archived files would be made available immediately upon request if they were housed in their repository. The ATN portal was an efficient way to search and order material on one platform as opposed to reaching out to individual publishers. The portal also added the newest edition of many sources automatically.

Going forward we will have to reach out to individual publishers. This will delay the processing of some requests and I suspect the response times will also vary from publisher to publisher. Time sensitive requests may entail the procurement of hard copies of texts in case we need to digitize in-house and provide a PDF sooner than later or if there is no response from a publisher.

I'm just wondering if anyone over at CARLI has any news about this, or if anyone knows of any alternatives to this resource that we can use.

Thanks,

  *   Michelle

We recognize that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships with the territories upon which York University campuses are located that precede the establishment of York University. York University acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat. It is now home to many First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities. We acknowledge the current treaty holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region.
