(via Emily Williams, Georgia State University) Registration is open for the free Georgia Library Association Carterette Series Webinar ?Responsibly Implementing AI in Libraries and Archives: Introducing a Decision-Making Tool for Practitioners?. It will take place on Wednesday, October 30, at 1:00 PM CDT. Please see below for more information, including the link to registration. Description Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in libraries and archives as a powerful tool for enhancing metadata, improving search and discovery, recommending resources, powering library chatbots, and more. However, AI systems also have the potential to cause social and ethical problems. AI may incorporate surveillance technologies that threaten user privacy, AI can provide misinformation that looks real, and AI reflects and amplifies the biases of our society due to biased training data. In response to these issues, the IMLS-funded Responsible AI in Libraries and Archives project has created a prototype tool that aims to guide practitioners through responsible implementation of AI. The prototype is based on new research conducted by the team, including a literature analysis, case studies, workshops with librarians and library users, and testing with library and archives practitioners. The tool takes the shape of a decision-making guide that incorporates LIS professional values such as Privacy and Consent, Resource Responsibility, Organizational Transparency, Literacy, and Access. The goal of the tool is to help practitioners implement AI in alignment with our professional values and reduce harm to our communities. During this webinar, members of the project team will discuss research results and introduce the prototype Responsible AI tool. The final version of the tool will be released in 2025. About the Presenters Sara Mannheimer is Associate Professor and Data Librarian at Montana State University, where she helps shape practices and theories for data curation, data sharing, and data discovery. (via Regine Heberlein, Princeton University) We are seeking participants for a research survey to assess the uptake of Linked Data technologies for cultural heritage description in the Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) community. The results from this survey are intended to capture the degree to which Linked Data is being implemented or used by different constituencies, to identify perceptions on added value or pain points of LD, and to infer risks and opportunities for further development in the areas of domain modeling and software development. This survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete depending on the specific responses. It can be paused at any time and completed at a later point. Your responses are collected anonymously and cannot be tied to your name or email address. No demographic information relating to your person other than your occupational role will be collected. The data collected in this survey will only be shared in aggregate for research purposes. The survey can be completed here. (via Adrian Ho, University of Chicago) The 20th International Open Repositories Conference (OR2025) will be held from Sunday, June 15, to Wednesday, June 18, in Chicago, IL. The theme for the Conference is ?Twenty Years of Progress, a Future of Possibilities?. OR2025 is the 20th anniversary of the Open Repositories Conference. We are marking this milestone with a Conference theme that reflects the progress and contributions that the repository community has made toward equitable access to digital resources and research outputs. In addition, we are also exploring the future possibilities of what repositories can do to tackle the many global challenges that currently exist. We particularly welcome proposals aligned to the overall theme, but also on other administrative, organizational, or practical topics related to open digital repositories. We are interested in the following sub-themes: * Community: How can repositories continue to serve a global community with diverse uses and needs? What can we as a repository community do to create connections through integrations, foster trust in the material held in repositories and promote local and indigenous knowledge? * Sustainability and Preservation: How can we ensure that repositories and their digital content last beyond the next 20 years in a financially and environmentally sustainable way? * Inspiration: Have you been inspired by attending an Open Repositories conference to develop, implement, change practices or start a project? We would love to hear how this is going! * Blue-sky thinking: What might the future of equitable access to digital resources and research outputs look like? How can we go beyond the status quo and AI as the answer to everything? Submission categories include posters, workshops, lightning talks, papers, the repository showdown, and panels. Please visit the Call for Proposals page to learn more about the sub-themes and submission categories of the Conference, including a full list of submission templates and key dates for submission deadlines and approvals. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, December 18. 2024. Submitters should note that presentations are in person and there is no remote/pre-recorded presentation option. Registration will open in February of 2025. Please check the Conference website for more information as it becomes available. (via Jules Bailey, Florida State University) The ACRL Health Science Interest Group?s next First Friday Forum is scheduled online for Friday, November 1, from 12:00 to 1:30 PM CDT. The topic is ?Forging a New Alliance: Engaging High School Students in the Health Humanities Through Special Collections and Archives?, and the presenters are Carrie J. Meyer, MA, University of Nebraska Medical Center, McGoogan Health Sciences Library; and Erin J. Torell, MA, University of Nebraska Medical Center, McGoogan Health Sciences Library. You do not have to be a member of ACRL to join us! Health Humanities have been shown to improve observation and listening skills, increase empathy, and build tolerance to ambiguity. They can offer healthcare providers a means to connect and understand patients, and to have a healthy self-care outlet to build resiliency and prevent burnout. Introducing the health humanities to students before they begin their intensive university studies and health-oriented careers could further future participation in health humanities. High School Alliance (HSA) is a pipeline program for Omaha-area public school juniors and seniors interested in a health sciences career to take classes from UNMC faculty. Since Spring 2022, the UNMC McGoogan Health Sciences Library Special Collections and Archives (SCA) faculty have designed, taught, and refined this course for students to utilize SCA rare books, archival material, and artifacts to create individual research papers, presentations, and a group exhibit project. Collaborating with SCA faculty, experts in graphic medicine and narrative medicine, and UNMC clinical faculty in delivering the course provides health sciences students a combination of science and humanities pedagogies and to see how both are critical for health sciences professions. Art, poetry, narrative medicine, graphic medicine, philosophy, and history were utilized by SCA faculty and guest speakers.
