In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Friday, January 31, 2025 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm The Power of Appraisal: Selecting Archives | CARLI Before donations arrive in your archives, the first step is looking over the item - do you think it fits your organization's mission? Can the item(s) be stored appropriately and cared for? What if this did not happen before you accepted the collection, and it's on the shelves-it happens to everyone. Appraisal often refers to the time spent assessing existing records for their potential to be retained as part of the historical record in your archives. Sometimes, this is done as part of surveying one's holdings or even when processing a collection. This 2-hour webinar will discuss the different values assigned to archives to help you better understand the appraisal principles and introduce techniques to identify records necessary for adequate documentation. A case study will be presented on a recent appraisal project, followed by a discussion and questions. Our panel will discuss the following topics: * Overview of appraisal, including appraisal considerations (basic concepts) * What can you get rid of, and how * Case study on an appraisal project with discussion * Share tools, resources, documentation This will be recorded and added to our CARLI Archives and Special Collections Resource Page. The Archives Task Force created a web resource repository for CARLI members to aid members in assessing, planning, and maintaining archival collections in ways that prioritize both care and access. The documents and educational materials provided will apply to all institutions, collection sizes, and collection types. The Archives & Special Collections Resources page provides information and resources from CARLI members about managing archival collections.. We need help with more documentation, but the Special Collections & Archives Resource Page currently includes PDF copies of forms, policies, procedures, and guidelines for managing archival collections. We are looking to include additional policies and procedures directly related to * Copyright policies or permission to publish * Archival Processing manuals and forms (such as separation forms, processing checklists or plans) * Reading room policies or forms (such as scan requests, reading room rules, registration forms) We want to learn from each other and build on the existing work of CARLI members! As part of this process, the Task Force will make monthly calls for CARLI members to send in their documentation relating to relevant topics. Task Force members will then review the documentation for possible inclusion in the webliography. Guidelines for submitting your forms to the Archives & Special Collections Resource Page: * The originating agency will submit their forms via e-mail attachment to CARLI Support (support at carli.illinois.edu)) as Word or PDF documents. CARLI Archives Taskforce will rename the document to identify the type of form and the donating institution clearly, i.e., "Photocopy Request - Illinois State University." We will also change Word documents into PDF documents before loading to the Web Resource Repository * The forms will be organized by type of form, not by repository. * Forms submission should be accompanied by an e-mail permitting CARLI to place the forms online. This does not have to be formal, but the note about permission must be clearly stated in the e-mail. * It will be the responsibility of the originating organization to send updated forms to CARLI * The originating agency can request that forms be removed at any time; however, a reasonable amount of time should be allowed for the request to be completed. Please send any questions or comments to CARLI Support at support at carli.illinois.edu. (via Jessica Hagman, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) The Qualitative Social Science & Humanities Data Interest Group (QSSHDIG) of is hosting a special issue of IASSIST Quarterly on data services for qualitative work that may be of interest to any of you working with qualitative data or researchers. In 2019, members of the IASSIST Qualitative Social Science & Humanities Data Interest Group (QSSHDIG) edited an IASSIST Quarterly special issue (Vol. 43, No 2 ) focused on extending data services to qualitative research by exploring training, service visibility, transparency, and reuse practices. A second special issue of IASSIST Quarterly is warranted to explore qualitative data through the lens of FAIR, CARE, open science, and access. (We consider qualitative data to include textual, audiovisual, and other non-numeric formats.) Given the recent global and disciplinary trends in open science and data, it is timely to revisit the qualitative data landscape to advance concepts, theory, and practices that support transparent, trustworthy, and accessible qualitative research now and into the future. The full call is available online, with proposals due Friday, January 31. Submissions or any questions can be directed to the special issue editors at iqspecialissue26 at gmail.com. (via Meg Frost, Brigham Young University) Registration is open for the next ACRL Science and Technology Section Hot Topics panel discussion, ?OER Evolved: AI, Libraries, and the Next Generation of Open Education?. It will take place virtually Tuesday, February 4, at 1:00 PM CDT. Open Educational Resources (OER) are transforming education, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating this evolution. This event explores how AI is reshaping OER creation, curation, and accessibility, with libraries playing a crucial role as hubs of expertise and resources. Join us as our panel discusses opportunities, challenges, and practical strategies for leveraging these tools. Panelist Presentations: Sarah Norris and Lily Dubach from U of Central Florida with an Overview of the Current AI/OER Landscape "The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and open educational resources (OER) holds significant potential for transforming education and scaling innovation. This presentation will offer an overview of the existing scholarly literature to describe the current landscape, including the opinions, opportunities, challenges, risks, and emerging trends. AI can play a pivotal role in enhancing the adoption, adaption, and authorship of OER, both through small experiments and larger theoretical discussions. However, AI also presents challenges and risks, including data privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, and ethical implications, in addition to a broader potential impact on intellectual property rights and sustainability of the OER ecosystems. This overview will provide takeaways on the intersection between AI and OER, informing future strategies for leveraging their combined potential to drive innovation and accessibility in education and as a way to scale impact for the Open Movement." Reed C. Hepler from College of Southern Idaho with Copyright Concerns Related to AI and OERs "Copyrighted materials place severe limitations on the abilities of educators and administrators. Open Access materials have been made completely free to the public with no hidden costs or fees but cannot always be edited or combined. Open Educational Resources can be reused in many ways and formats, traditional and innovative. Generative AI offers personalization of learning and integration of a wide range of materials in new iterations, but prompts questions about copyright, what it means to be a "user," ownership, and fulfillment of learning objectives. This presentation examines the implications, opportunities, and challenges of incorporating each of these materials into a new form of education, using modern technology and materials according to traditional principles." Jennifer Goodland from San Juan College with Using AI to Create Curated Packages of Library Resources "When people think of Open Educational Resources (OER), they usually imagine open-access textbooks. At San Juan College, we're taking a different approach. Instead of a single textbook, we create OER as packages of curated library resources, complete with a short summary of each and reflection questions to help guide students through the material. This method takes advantage of the variety of perspectives already available in library collections while keeping things flexible and affordable for both students and instructors. Prompt engineering plays a key role in this process, helping us refine searches, tailor content to specific learning goals, and enhance the quality of reflection questions. I'll walk you through how ? and why ? we developed this model, and how our methodology has improved educational equity." Panelist presentations will be recorded. Please register for the panel discussion at this link. If you have any questions about the event, please e-mail the STS Hot Topics Winter Chair, Meg Frost, at megan at byu.edu. (via Bernie Folan, Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association) OASPA is excited to announce our first webinar of 2025, "Open access funders and enablers outside the library: fresh perspectives and lesser-heard voices", will take place on Thursday, January 23, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM CDT. Supporting open access (OA), and the transition to OA, needs money within the system of scholarly publishing to be redirected at a grand scale. We often talk and think about universities, institutions and libraries as playing a pivotal role. However, research funders and supporters of various types can make a substantial difference. In this session, we hear directly from public and private organizations about their role in enabling, embracing and engaging with OA. Each speaker will bring their views on practicing and supporting OA research; the challenges they face when it comes to OA; and the questions they pose along with solutions they propose, to bolster innovation and help society at large through open scholarship. Full details can be found on the latest blog post. Please register here. (via Geoffrey Morse, Northwestern University) Registration is open for the ALA RUSA (Reference and User Services Association) History Librarians Discussion Group?s virtual session on Wednesday, February 26, at 12:00 PM CDT. The discussion will cover historic newspaper content. Please see below for more details, including the link to registration. Libraries now have access to a great deal of historic newspaper content through a wide variety of providers ranging from major vendors to small local collections. Below are some questions to consider as more and more newspaper content becomes available to libraries and researchers. * What are gaps in online coverage of historic newspaper content (e.g. non US, foreign language, local presses etc.)? * With so much historic newspaper content available what are some of the biggest challenges you face when helping researchers locate material? * How important is having a basic background in newspaper history to effectively assisting researchers with online newspaper content? Please register to join us for this discussion! Registration is open to anyone. Membership in ALA, RUSA and the History Section are not required to participate in this discussion. We especially encourage those responsible for promoting primary source collections and those involved in integrating these types of resources into library discovery and search systems. Register here.
