From EEdwards at ILSOS.GOV Mon Mar 3 18:44:16 2025 From: EEdwards at ILSOS.GOV (Edwards, Eric A) Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2025 18:44:16 +0000 Subject: [ArchivesSpCollig] call for Chicago-area librarians willing to collaborate on a Gen Z Zine about climate emotions and wellness In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Please excuse any cross-posting. (via Mandi Goodsett, Cleveland State University) SustainRT (the American Library Association?s Sustainability Round Table) has connections with the Climate Mental Health Network, and we were really excited to see its most recent publication, a Gen Z Zine created by teen authors. It includes a page of recommended books to obtain from a local library. Zoharia Drizin, a member of the Network?s Gen Z Advisory Board, is one of the editors and contributors to the new Gen Z zine that she and her peers created over the past year. Zoharia is interested in presenting the zine at Chicago library/ies. Is there anyone at a Chicago-area library who might be interested in partnering with her? Since National Library Week is during Earth Month, this could be great timing and CMHN would help to amplify it online. Thank you so much for considering! Book Snakes and Other Preservation-Related Crafts for Library Outreach April 9, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Central Time Hands-on craft projects can be a great way to connect with library users, spark interest in a particular collection, serve as a fun de-stressing activity during finals week, and introduce users to preservation and book arts. Join Gabriel Hamer, Newberry Library with Shelby Strommer and Arthur Hall, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign for a webinar focusing on easy outreach crafts including "snake" book weights and two simple sewn books. No preservation experience is required to host one of these activities in your library! The Preservation of Trustworthy Digital Records: 25 Years of InterPARES Research is the fifth presentation of the CARLI AI Symposium! April 15, 1:30-2:20 p.m. (full symposium is 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.) Dr. Luciana Duranti, School of Information of the University of British Columbia (UBC), in Vancouver, Canada, will first identify the goal and key products of each of the 5 phases of the InterPARES project, a multinational and multidisciplinary research endeavor on the long-term preservation of reliable, accurate and authentic digital records. It will then focus on examples of case studies and general studies that are being carried out by the researchers of the 5th phase of the project, I Trust AI, which is in course. I Trust AI aims to design, develop and leverage AI tools to ensure the long-term availability and accessibility of trustworthy digital records. Ask a Preservation Expert May 1, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Central Time Do you have questions about the best way to store and preserve your institution's collections? Join the CARLI Preservation Committee for Ask a Preservation Expert virtual office hours on Thursday, May 1, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Committee members will be on hand to answer questions, offer advice, and share resources to help you plan for the long-term preservation and access of your materials. The Preservation Committee includes members who specialize in archives and special collections, conservation, collections care, disaster planning, and more. Don't have a specific question? You're still welcome to join the session and hear what other CARLI members want to know. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've been reading from multiple books on the topic, and I've found many great resources online, including those available on the CARLI website. In addition to what I've found, I'd like to get firsthand accounts from anyone here who has experience. Here are some examples of info I'm after: * What type of scanner did you use? (It seems that most of the scanners referenced in the resources I've looked at have been discontinued.) * What problems did you experience with it? * How loud is the machine? * Do you think this equipment will work for items like the ones I have? (We will be digitizing sheets of paper, yearbooks, sheets of paper with newspaper clippings taped to them, and ephemera.) * Is there other equipment you like better or that you think would work for our project? * What software did you use? * What platform is used to host and access the digital resources? * Do you have resources set aside for ongoing long-term storage of digital objects (digital preservation)? * How long did your project take? * What was the overall cost of your project? If any of you have completed a digitization project in-house (especially within the last couple years), please let me know of any products you used, lessons learned, etc. If you have any workflow documentation you'd be willing to share, that'd be great.
