[spcollig] Aerial photography and the Illinois State Library

After reading the recent CARLI special collections interest group e-mail messages about aerial photography, here is some information from Tom Huber in our map library about the aerial photography available at the Illinois State Library:
"The Illinois State Library has an extensive collection of aerial photography. From the first flights in the late 1930s until the present time, Illinois has been documented from the air. Statewide aerial photographs were first acquired for Illinois from 1938 through 1941. The original silver nitrate film negatives were destroyed by the National Archives in the 1980s due to deterioration and instability. Use of the paper prints over time has resulted in their becoming faded, worn, defaced, or lost. Access to these print collections is becoming increasingly restricted. As part of a cooperative effort between the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Illinois State Library, these photos can now be viewed or downloaded at ISGS's Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome/webdocs/ilhap.)

Digital files are offered as LizardTech's MrSID .sid files, in either first generation or Generation 2 .sid file formats. Target compression ratios were 12:1 or 6:1, respectively; one compressed file is roughly 3 megabytes or 7.5 megabytes in size, respectively. Digitization, or print scanning, has been completed for 90 counties in Illinois in an effort to create a lasting archive of this irreplaceable collection. The aerial photographs have not been georeferenced. Adjacent aerial photographs can be used for stereoscopic viewing.

The remaining 12 counties are scheduled to become available by September, 2011. These are: Piatt, Carroll, Fayette, Henderson, Henry, McDonough, Montgomery, Moultrie, Ogle, Shelby, Stephenson and Warren.

The Illinois State Library holds the uncompressed Illinois Historic Aerial Photograph master files. ISL also owns the most of the original Historical Aerial Photograph print collection. However these photos do not circulate. To learn more about the photos here are a couple sources of information:

     http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/what_we_have/pdfs/ilhap_flyer.pdf

The library's collection also includes the 1988 & 1993 flights (print photographs only), the 1998 (also available at http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome) on CD-ROM & paper prints, and the 2005 (also available at http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome) on paper prints or the uncompressed master files.

To obtain copies of the uncompressed files or photos not yet digitized, please contact Tom Huber at islmap at ilsos.net

Arlyn Booth and Tom Huber are wonderful resources for all sorts of map-related questions.

Subject: [spcollig] Map search

Hi all-
Today I had a patron looking for specific aerial photos of certain Illinois counties (she is working on this project: http://www.isgs.illinois.edu/nsdihome/webdocs/ilhap/). We did not have them at our library, and I thought I would try this list-serv on the off-chance that any of you might have them in your special collections.

Looking for:
Carroll County 1939 aerial photograph
Stephenson County 1939 aerial photograph
Piatt County 1940 aerial photograph

If any of you have one or more of these, let me know and I'll pass the information along!

thanks!
-Amanda
