Digital Collections Librarian
The Newberry Library seeks an early-career librarian with a humanities
background and the technical ability and knowledge to assist in
developing and managing the library’s digital assets. The Digital
Collections Librarian will participate in the implementation and
management of the library’s growing digital collections and help to
coordinate metadata production and services. In addition, the Digital
Collections Librarian will work closely with digital reproduction
services, publication and digital initiatives, and information
technology staff members and serve on the reference team. The position
reports to the Curator of Modern Manuscripts and the Director of
Collection Services.
The Newberry Library, an independent research library focused on the
humanities, is in the midst of multiple technology-based
developments—implementing a website redesign, planning for digital asset
management and preservation, determining how to manage born-digital
assets, producing digital publications and online exhibitions for
scholarly and general audiences, and more. The Digital Collections
Librarian position is new to the library, and the responsibilities of
the position may change in emphasis over time as the library develops
its digital program and services.

QUALIFICATIONS : MLS from ALA-accredited institution or equivalent
degree required. Background in the humanities, library work experience,
and experience providing access to digital resources highly desirable.
Interest in the Newberry’s scholarly and public mission, collections,
and audiences required.
Experience in or knowledge of the following: Digital library/archives
trends and technologies; Integrated library systems and collection
management systems; Metadata/cataloging standards and controlled
vocabularies; Metadata harvesting and crosswalks; Archives descriptive
standards and digital curation issues; Data manipulation; Digital
collection access and use; Digital photography and scanning techniques
and standards.
Leadership, project management, communication, and organizational
skills: Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to facilitate
collaboration; Excellent writing skills; Ability to communicate
effectively with diverse library users and staff; Public service
orientation requiring tact, patience, and flexibility; Ability to work
independently and collegially; Capacity for working flexibly and
creatively in a changing environment.
