From EEdwards at ILSOS.GOV Wed Jan 11 15:10:30 2023 From: EEdwards at ILSOS.GOV (Edwards, Eric A) Date: Wed, 11 Jan 2023 15:10:30 +0000 Subject: [ArchivesSpCollig] reminder: proposals for ACRL Rare Books & Manuscripts Section 2023 Conference (June 27-30, Tues.-Fri., in Bloomington, IN, and virtually) due Fri., Jan. 20 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Please excuse any cross-posting. (via Elizabeth DeBold, Doctoral Student at Newcastle University) With January upon us, there are somehow only days left to submit a proposal for the ACRL Rare Books & Manuscripts Section 2023 Conference! It's looking like an exciting batch so far, and the entire committee is looking forward to welcoming you all to Indiana University's Bloomington campus, and also virtually, from Tuesday, June 27, to Friday, June 30. Submit your proposals here: rbms2023.us2.pathable.com/call-for-proposals. The deadline is Friday, January 20. As you finish up your proposals, here are a few reminders: - You can and are encouraged to submit individual papers and partial panels! Committee members will help match you with other participants. - Scholarships are available! The deadline to apply for these is also Friday, January 20: rbms2023.us2.pathable.com/apply-for-scholarship - Proposals will be evaluated using a rubric. The broad selection criteria are listed on the CFP, or in this spreadsheet in full: bit.ly/RBMS2023EvalRubric - Proposals do not have to be on the Conference theme; though we encourage folks to think about how their ideas for proposals might relate to the broad theme of how we educate ourselves, provide opportunities for others, and how we discuss our work outside of our institutions. Please feel free to reach out with questions, comments, and concerns to elizabethdebold at gmail.com and elott at email.unc.edu. We'll be happy to answer, or to bring your thoughts to the committee. Looking forward to reading your proposals, and to seeing as many of you as possible in six months in Bloomington, Indiana, at the wonderful, newly-renovated Lilly Library. Eric A. (via Gwen Gregory, Northern Illinois University) Please join the Southern Historical Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill's Wilson Special Collections Library for a virtual panel discussion. Titled "Finding Your People: Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of Documenting Black Families in Special Collections and Archives", the discussion will take place on Thursday, February 9, from 12:30 to 2:00 PM CDT. The Black family, its structure, representation, and characteristics seem to be a near-constant topic of question and conjecture in our society. What role do archives play in these discussions and our understanding of the Black family? This panel discussion will bring together faculty researchers and archival practitioners to discuss the representation of Black families in the archive, the history, and impact of collecting, examine where we are at this current moment, and what the future of Black family collections might look like. This virtual event is co-sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion & Cultural Heritage at Rare Book School.
