A related discussion from DePaul. We were discussing here this item in the Primo 2025-26 roadmap:
Enhanced the Advanced Search exact matching for titles, allowing results to be retrieved for either:
* Subfields 245 $a and $b combined
* Subfield 245 $a only.
* Currently, in Advanced Search, when using the "equals exact phrase" operator for titles, Primo VE retrieves results that match the combined subfields 245 $a and $b.
* With this enhancement, institutions can configure whether to include title exact matches for 245 $a in addition to 245 $a$b,
Improved Search Experience with more flexibility to match the results to your needs.
The analysis from one of our catalogers was as follows:
1. New option: Always match on just the 245$a (title only)
2. Or keep the current functionality: Always match on both the 245$a$b (title AND subtitle)
Either way presents problems:
1. Option 1: Would help users who just have the title but would not match if they added additional information of the subtitle
2. Option 2: Would help users who have both the title and subtitle but wouldn’t match if users have the title only.
I honestly can’t see how this is an improvement. Personally, I think we’d ideally want Primo to do both and concatenate the results doing some sort of relevance sort. However, others who deal more with users would have more input on what trips up users more and which one would be better to have as our setting.
I guess given that there’s this upcoming flexibility for individuals on this on the roadmap, and the lack of clarity on the benefits of doing it, I’m not sure it’s something we need to make a decision about now.
